YRG CARE Profile

The Y. R. G. Centre for AIDS Research & Education (YRG CARE) was formed in 1993 within the Y.R. Gaitonde Medical, Educational and Research Foundation, a public charitable trust. Dr. Suniti Solomon, the Founding Director of the Centre is a retired Professor of Microbiology from the Madras Medical College. In 1986, her laboratory documented the first evidence of HIV in India.

YRG CARE has a stated mission to respond to needs of people who are not receiving care and support or education/information for HIV.

YRG CARE is striving to create a social consensus towards its vision and objectives that people with HIV and AIDS and their families live with dignity, and there are no new HIV infections.

YRG CARE has multiple activities in the areas of prevention, research, care and support. These include
  • Adolescent Sexual Health Project

  • Continuum of Care: Integrated Care Model
  • Documentation and dissemination of best practices
  • Social action programme
  • Consulting in Sexual health, Programme Management, Care and Support for people with HIV in resource poor countries
  • Information, Education & Communication (IEC)

The activities of YRG CARE are guided by the  Institution Review Board and Community Advisory Board.
