Getting
into the holiday spirit at YRG CARE means much more than just
colorful decoration sprinkled around the building. The holiday
spirit takes a rather special and exciting form; an annual holiday
event for YRG’s children and families affected by HIV/AIDS.
The week before the December 10th 2006 event was filled with
preparing colorful decorations, enthusiastic choir practices,
and elaborate gift baskets.
And I have to say, that I haven’t used markers, paints,
glitter and my vocal chords this much since grade school.
Erecting a large colorful tent in front of the YRG hospital,
and powering up popcorn and candy cloud (cotton candy) machines
marked the preparation of the day’s events. The children
arrived at YRG CARE early that day for YRG’s pediatric
outpatient clinic, run my Dr. Mothi. Dr. Mothi is a pediatrician
who has provided 3 years of devoted pediatric services at YRG
care and is extremely dedicated to providing excellent medical
care to YRG’s children.
Dr.
Suniti Solomon and the children of YRG care started off the
day’s events by warmly thanking Dr. Mothi for his sincere
dedication as their doctor. The day then progressed with a visit
from Santa Claus, holiday songs from the choir, and colorful
skits and dances performed by YRG CARE staff. Children were
also invited to play games in numerous booths, which included
a ring toss, pin-the-tail-on-the-elephant, and “penny
in a bucket”. At this point the tent in front of YRG was
bustling with children whose teeth were pink from eating cotton
candy, and hands filled with popcorn, gifts and other goodies.
Gift hampers were also given to each child. Parents also enthusiastically
participated in the games and food.
The
day was also made possible by many of the generous donations
of gifts and food items from the greater community. A special
thanks to Pithavadian and Partners, Pepsico Ltd. , ITC, Isex
Fashions, Oriental Inn, Soyvita and Round Table -124 for their
generous donations
A visit to the doctor can be a
very tough day for any child. This event allowed the children
to experience something special this holiday season during one
of their clinic visits. As a visitor to YRG CARE, the holiday
event was definitely an invaluable experience, and was a great
privilege to be a part of.
Aparna is a 4th
year medical student at Tufts University School of Medicine
in Boston Massachusetts and is currently in Chennai doing her
internship at YRG CARE. |
